Cadet Tyler Wood receives a ceremony  for $1,000 as part of his participation in the Virginia National Guard’s Referral Enlistment Program April 2, 2023, at Fort Barfoot, Virginia, during Virginia Tech’s multi-day Field Training Exercise, or FTX. Maj. Kim Wynn, commander of the Virginia National Guard’s Recruiting and Retention Battalion and Virginia Tech alum, presented the check to Wood, and encouraged the cadets to participate in the REP and help grow the Virginia National Guard. Wood is a member of the Simultaneous Membership Program, or SMP, in which Soldiers serve in both the Virginia National Guard and their school’s ROTC program. Under the REP, Virginia citizens can earn $1,000 for providing qualified leads to the Virginia National Guard who ultimately enlist into the organization.
