Adjutant General of Virginia
2023 Labor Day Message

Virginia National Guard Team:

Labor Day was established as a federal holiday in 1894 to recognize the many contributions of the American worker. Today, it celebrates the hard work, resilience and ingenuity of the workers who are critical to our nation’s success and prosperity. For the Virginia National Guard, Labor Day is an appropriate time to recognize the significant role our state and federal employees play in the readiness of our formations. Our employees repair vehicles, aircraft and equipment; maintain our armories and facilities; manage billeting offices; prepare ranges for training and perform other critical functions across Virginia. Each contributing to the security of our commonwealth and the defense of our nation. Let’s remember these great Americans and Virginians for their spirit and adaptability. This Labor Day, we honor you for not only defending the American dream, but for being such a vital and vibrant part of it. Thank you. We should also remember that Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer and presents an opportunity to spend time with family and friends. Whatever your plans, I ask that you to keep in mind that we’re in the most critical time of year for accidents. Remember that as you celebrate, you are our greatest asset. Look out for yourself, your teammates, and your families to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday. Thank you for your service in defense of this great nation. Have fun this long weekend but remember to always play it safe. Guard what you love! Maj. Gen. James W. Ring 29th Adjutant General of Virginia
