Col. Van T. Barfoot visits his son Tom during flight school in Fort Wolters, Texas, in 1968. Tom would eventually serve as a Virginia Army National Guard aviator in the 1970s. Fort Pickett will be redesignated Fort Barfoot in honor of Col. Barfoot during a ceremony March 24, 2023, in the Fort Pickett area near Blackstone, Virginia.
