RICHMOND, Va. - Virginia National Guard Soldiers and Airmen assigned to the Fort Barfoot-based 34th Civil Support Team conduct a training proficiency evaluation Oct. 17, 2023, at the Five Forks Unit of the Petersburg National Battlefield in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. During the full-scale exercise portion of the TPE, the unit responded to a notional chemical and biological weapons threat, performing reconnaissance surveys and collecting samples of unknown substances for identification. The team also practiced a “man down” scenario, simulating an incapacitated team member. The unit conducts their TPE, which includes two full-scale exercises evaluated by U.S. Army North, roughly every 18 months. The 34th CST can identify unknown substances, assess current and projected consequences, advise an incident commander on response measures and assist with requests for additional state support.
