VIERVILLE-SUR-MER, France - U.S. Army National Guard Soldiers assigned to the 29th Infantry Division attend a D-Day commemoration ceremony honoring the 82nd Airborne Division and 90th Infantry Division June 5, 2026, at Square Virgil Tangborn in Gourbesville, France. The ceremony honored the American Soldiers who fought and died during the liberation of Gourbesville in June 1944, including paratroopers from the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, and Soldiers from the 90th Infantry Division. The square is named in memory of Pfc. Virgil Tangborn, a French horn player who later trained as a medic and was killed by enemy fire June 14, 1944. More than 600 U.S. service members, including 30 assigned to the 29th Infantry Division, are in Normandy to commemorate the 82nd anniversary of the D-Day landings and honor the legacy of those who fought there.
