29th Division Band- "The Governor's Own"
The Troutville-based 29th Division Band consists of 40 enlisted Soldiers and one chief warrant officer. It has been as large as 48 musicians in the recent past. Its mission is to support the Virginia National Guard with military and community support performances around the Commonwealth and abroad.
The 29th Division Band contains several smaller ensembles called Musical Performance Teams (MPT’s.) At a minimum they include a concert band, marching band, ceremonial band (The Normandy Winds),and rock band (Easy Green), We also may provide a brass ensemble (Normandy Brass), clarinet ensemble, Fife and Drum ensemble as the instrumentation and personnel allow. Additionally the band has a color guard and a sound reinforcement team to support 29th Infantry Division Band missions.
The Soldiers of the 29th Division Band perform an average of 45 missions per year. Half of the missions are ceremonial missions supporting the Virginia National Guard, Active Duty, and the Army Reserve. The other half of their missions are community support events such as parades, veterans organization ceremonies and concerts.
The band’s most recent foreign assignments were in Bosnia-Herzegovina in support of Stabilization Force 10 in 2002, and the 60th Anniversary of D-Day in Normandy, France in 2004. In 2007, the 29th Division Band backfilled the 77th Army Band at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, for annual training. In 2011, the 29th Division Band backfilled the storied 101st Airborne Band at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, for Annual Training.
The band has performed the National Anthem at the NASCAR Races in Richmond and Martinsville. In 2014, the 29th Division Band sent nine members back to Normandy for the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Landing. On June 6th 2014 that nine-member group performed in Normandy, France, at the same time its ceremonial band performed in Bedford, Virginia, at the National D-Day Memorial. In 2017 a 9-member group performed in Kuwait to support the 29th Infantry Division during Operation Inherent Resolve.
The band provides military music for the Governor’s Inauguration ceremony as they are “The Governor’s Own.”
