VNG supports 75th Virginia Gubernatorial Inauguration

Virginia National Guard Soldiers and Airmen supported the inauguration of Abigail Spanberger as the 75th Governor of Virginia Jan. 17, 2026, in Richmond, Virginia. VNG personnel conducted a variety of missions including a blank-fire artillery salute, playing ceremonial music and conducting a flyover with F-22 fighter jets. A formation of Virginia National Guard Soldiers and Airmen also led the inaugural parade.

Virginia National Guard Soldiers assigned to the Winchester-based 3rd Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team conduct a movement to contact training lane June 17, 2025, at Fort Pickett, Virginia. The 116th is the first Army National Guard brigade to test the approved task organization for a mobile brigade combat team, and it will be evaluated during a 21-day eXportable Combat Training Capability rotation.

​​​​​​​The Virginia National Guard’s Staunton-based 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team was officially converted to the 116th Mobile Brigade Combat Team effective Oct. 16, 2025, by the Army Structure Memorandum, commonly referred to as the ARSTRUC.

U.S. Army National Guard Soldiers assigned to the 29th Infantry Division participate in a ceremony honoring the Bedford Boys June 6, 2026 at Omaha Beach in Vierville-sur-Mer, France. On June 6, 1944, D-Day, 29th ID Soldiers assigned to Alpha Company, 116th Infantry Regiment, from the small community of Bedford, Virginia, were among the first to land on Omaha Beach at 6:30 a.m. That morning on the beach, 19 men from Alpha Company  - the Bedford Boys - died, the largest per capita loss suffered by any American town. 

More than 600 U.S. service members, including 30 from the 29th ID, are in Normandy to commemorate the 82nd anniversary of the D-Day landings. During the ceremony, Gen. Steven S. Nordhaus, chief of the National Guard Bureau, while Maj. Gen. Joseph A. DiNonno, a former commanding general of the 29th Infantry Division, served as a keynote speaker. 29th ID Soldiers honor D-Day legacy across Normandy

In the early morning hours of June 6, 2026, the 29th Infantry Division’s blue-and-gray emblem was etched into the sand in the Dog Green Sector of Omaha Beach, marking the ground where the division came ashore 82 years earlier. The tide was out, the morning quiet. As the sun began to rise, 30 U.S. Army National Guard Soldiers assigned to the 29th Infantry Division fell into formation near the emblem. Around them stood senior military leaders, historical reenactors, French citizens and travelers from around the world, all gathered to honor the Bedford Boys.

Virginia Air Guard, Finnish Partners Sharpen Tactics, Readiness

Two F-22 Raptors from the Virginia Air National Guard’s 149th Fighter Squadron touched down at Ebbing Air National Guard Base June 16 for a joint-training exercise with Finnish Air Force F-35 Lightning II aircraft.

Maj. Gen. James W. Ring, the Adjutant General of Virginia, and Chief Master Sgt. John F. Nye, the Virginia National Guard’s senior enlisted leader, welcome home VNG Soldiers assigned to the Hanover-based 229th Military Police Company, 276th Engineer Battalion, 329th Regional Support Group June 16, 2026, at Fort Bliss, Texas. Approximately 130 Soldiers are back in the United States after a federal active duty deployment to the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. The unit began their federal active duty during a ceremony in June 2025.
229th MPs return to U.S. after CENTCOM mobilization

Virginia National Guard Soldiers assigned to the Hanover-based 229th Military Police Company, 276th Engineer Battalion, 329th Regional Support Group returned to the United States June 13, 2026, following their federal active duty deployment to the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility.

VNG Counterdrug Task Force supports major police initiative in Roanoke

Virginia National Guard Soldiers assigned to the Counterdrug Task Force recently supported a multi-agency law enforcement initiative resulting in arrests and drug and weapon seizures in the Roanoke, Virginia, area. 

Virginia National Guard senior leaders and Soldiers participate in the 82nd D-Day Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony June 6, 2026, at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia. Maj. Gen. James W. Ring, the Adjutant General of Virginia, read the names of the World War II veterans present at the ceremony and placed a wreath at the memorial with Chief Master Sgt. John F. Nye, the VNG’s senior enlisted leader. The Troutville-based 29th Infantry Division Band provided ceremonial music for the event. The ceremony commemorated the 82nd anniversary of the allied landings in Normandy, France, during World War II, as well as the 25th anniversary of memorial’s opening.
VNG supports D-Day anniversary ceremony in Bedford

Virginia National Guard senior leaders and Soldiers participated in the 82nd D-Day Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony June 6, 2026, at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia. The event also marked the 25th anniversary of the memorial’s existence. 

Three Virginia Army National Guard Soldiers conduct an urban patrolling operations exchange with members of the Tajik military May 4 - 8, 2026, in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Back in Virginia, the 183rd Regiment, Regional Training Institute hosted similar training for a different group of Tajik troops May 11 - 22, 2026, at Fort Pickett, Virginia. The engagements were conducted in support of the Department of Defense’s State Partnership Program, in which Virginia and Tajikistan have been formal partners since 2003.

Virginia Army National Guard Soldiers conducted an urban patrolling operations exchange with members of the Tajik military in May both in Tajikistan and at Fort Pickett.

Virginia Army National Guard Soldiers assigned to the Staunton-based 116th Mobile Brigade Combat Team unload vehicles and equipment from railcars June 3, 2026, at Fort Polk, Louisiana. The vehicles and equipment traveled from Virginia to Louisiana in support of a training rotation at the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk. The 116th MBCT is the first Army National Guard brigade to participate in a JRTC rotation as a mobile brigade combat team after formally transitioning from an infantry brigade combat team in 2025. JRTC provides U.S. military units and personnel with complex, realistic combat training, including joint and combined arms operations, force-on-force scenarios and live-fire exercises. The Virginia National Guard’s Staunton-based 116th Mobile Brigade Combat Team are testing their combat readiness during a Joint Readiness Training Center rotation May 31 - July 1, 2026, at Fort Polk, Louisiana.

Nevers, the Virginia Department of Military Affairs Chief of Staff, present awards to DMA workers during a state employee recognition luncheon May 28, 2026, at Fort Pickett, Virginia. Nevers, the Virginia Department of Military Affairs Chief of Staff, presented awards to DMA workers during a state employee recognition luncheon May 28, 2026, at Fort Pickett, Virginia.

Virginia Natonal Guard Soldiers assigned to the Chesterfield-based Detachment 1, Charlie Company, 2-245th Aviation Regiment, conduct a departure ceremony and officially begin their federal active duty May 27, 2026, in Chesterfield, Virginia. Retired Maj. Gen. Timothy P. Williams, the Virginia Secretary of Veterans and Defense Affairs, Maj. Gen. James W. Ring, the Adjutant General of Virginia, and Lt. Col. Carolina Rohlfing, commander of the 2nd Battalion, 224th Aviation Regiment, were on hand to bid the Soldiers farewell, thank them for their service and recognize the sacrifices of their families. The detachment operates and maintains a C-12 Huron, the VNG’s fixed wing capability, and is mobilizing to the U.S. Central Command area of operations.

Virginia’s senior leaders honor service members who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country at the Commonwealth’s Memorial Day Ceremony May 25, 2026, at the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond, Virginia. Governor Abigail Spanberger and First Gentleman Adam Spanberger, and retired Maj. Gen. Timothy P. Williams, the Virginia Secretary of Veterans and Defense Affairs, and his wife Cheryl Williams, placed memorial wreaths to honor the fallen. Maj. Gen. James W. Ring, the Adjutant General of Virginia, provided remarks to the crowd. Sgt. Emeana P.
