RICHMOND, Va. –
Maj. Gen. James W. Ring, the Adjutant General of Virginia, announced new Virginia National Guard senior leader assignments in an announcement Aug. 12, 2026, in Richmond, Virginia.
Lt. Col. Jason Detweiler, the current G8 resource management and finance officer, has been selected by the Secretary of the Army to replace Col. Jeffrey Cree as the VNG’s U.S. Property and Fiscal Officer, effective Oct. 1, 2026.
The United States Property and Fiscal Officer for Virginia performs duties as an agent of the Chief of National Guard Bureau to receive and account for all federal funds and property in the possession of the Virginia Army and Air National Guard, and maintains a dual responsibility to CNGB and the Adjutant General of Virginia and is responsible to ensure that all applicable laws, regulations and policies established by Congress, Department of Defense, and Departments of the Army and Air Force are complied with in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
“Lt. Col. Detweiler has demonstrated exceptional competence with a proven track record in resource management, logistics and leadership, making him uniquely positioned to balance the dual responsibility to the Chief of the National Guard Bureau and the Adjutant General of Virginia,” said Ring. “His continued service is invaluable as the Virginia National Guard continues to execute its essential missions for the commonwealth and nation.”
Cree has served in the role since 2019.
“The Virginia National Guard extends its sincere appreciation to Col. Cree for his distinguished military career, which includes over 20 years of dedicated service to the Virginia National Guard and six years in the regular Army,” said Ring.
On the enlisted side, Command Sgt. Maj. Brodie Kirkland, currently the 91st Cyber Brigade’s senior operations chief, will take responsibility as the command sergeant major for the Staunton-based 116th Mobile Brigade Combat Team from Command Sgt. Maj. Benzie Timberlake. Timberlake becomes the J3 operations sergeant major.
“Command Sgt. Maj. Kirkland brings a wealth of experience in leader development and tactical proficiency,” said Ring. “His proven leadership and dedication to troop welfare will be instrumental during the MBCT’s upcoming deployment.
“Command Sgt. Maj. Timberlake’s steadfast guidance significantly shaped the organization during the MBCT’s Joint Readiness Training Center rotation this past June.”
Both senior enlisted leader assignments are effective Sept. 1, 2026.
