Command Sergeant Major

2nd Battalion, 224th Aviation Regiment

1.  This vacancy announcement is for the position of Command Sergeant Major

      a.  Projected fill date: 01 March 2026

      b.  Unit where vacancy exist: 2nd Battalion, 224th Aviation Regiment, Sandston, VA (WUAXT0).

2.  Eligibility Criteria:
 
  1. Hold the rank of Master Sergeant (MSG)/E8 with previous First Sergeant experience preferred.
 
  1. Applicants must be listed on the current Sergeant Major Order Merit List (OML), or currently an E-9.
 
  1. Must be a graduate of the U.S. Army Sergeant Major Course (USASMA) or meet requirements to attend.
 
  1. Must have a minimum of a Secret Security Clearance.
 
  1. Be a member or eligible to become a member of the VAARNG.
 
  1. Soldiers who are not qualified in the 15Z military occupational specialty (MOS) must meet the reclassification criteria located in DA PAM 611-21 (Smartbook) for 15Z
within 12 months of assuming the position.
 
  1. Active Guard Reserve (AGR) Sergeant Major in the Virginia Army National Guard (VAARNG) currently assigned in a E9 position within the Joint Force Headquarters (JFHQ), Table of Distribution and Allowances (TDA) unit or higher headquarters in the chain of command are eligible to apply.  AGR Sergeants Major if selected, must obtain The Adjutant General (TAG) approved Command Leadership Waiver before being assigned to the position.  AGR E8’s are not eligible to apply or eligible for promotion through the Command, leadership, and staff assignments program (CLASP) as per NGR 600-5 para 4-5f(3)(c).  All AGR applicants must include a signed memo of understanding from their full-time Officer in Charge (OIC).

3.  How to apply: Interested candidates must submit all documents in one portable document format (PDF) NOT a PDF Portfolio in the order listed below, no later than (NLT) 1 January 2026.  Packets will not be accepted if they are submitted after 2359 on the suspense date or if they are not in one PDF file.  Packets will be emailed to the point of contact listed below.
 
  1. Memorandum requesting consideration from the Soldier applying with reason why the Soldier wants to be the 2-224th Aviation Regiment Command Sergeant Major.
 
  1. Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT)/ Army Fitness Test (AFT) from most recent to oldest results for the last three years (DA 705) or Individual Training Record ITR printed from the Digital Training Management System (DTMS). In order from most recent to oldest.
 
  1. Height/weight certification memorandum within 30 days from immediate commander. DA Form 5500/5501, Body fat worksheet within 30 days (if required).
 
  1. Individual Medical Readiness (IMR) printout from Medical Protection System (MEDPROS) indicating current Periodic Health Assessment (PHA) status.
 
  1. Last five Non-Commissioned Officer Evaluation Reports (NCOERs).  In order from most recent to oldest.
 
  1. Verification of Security Clearance from Major Subordinate Command (MSC)/ Unit Security Manager.
 
  1. Copy of current Enlisted Record Brief (ERB) or Soldier Talent Profile (STP) front and back pulled from Integrated Personnel and Pay System – Army (IPPS-A).
 
  1. Biographical Sketch per NGR 600-200, Figure G-3.
 
  1. Most recent DA From 1059 indicating highest military education completed.
 
  1. Letter of recommendation from chain of command. (optional)
 
  1. Memorandum of Understanding from OIC. (AGR only)
