Fort Barfoot


Fort Pickett was officially redesignated Fort Barfoot in honor of Col. Van T. Barfoot, a World War II Medal of Honor recipient with extensive Virginia ties, during a ceremony March 24, 2023. The post is one of nine U.S. Army installations being renamed based on the Naming Commission’s recommendations to remove the names and symbols honoring or commemorate the Confederate States of America.

Located near Blackstone, Fort Barfoot has more than 225 full-time state and federal employees provide support to tenant and training units on approximately 41,000 acres featuring a combination of open and wooded terrain maneuver areas and 21 ranges capable of supporting almost any weapons system in the U.S. Army inventory with barracks to support more than 5,000 personnel as well as an Army airfield operation.

Blue and Gray division welcomes new CSM

The 29th Infantry Division welcomed Command Sgt. Maj. Eric J. Saxton as its new senior enlisted leader in a change of responsibility ceremony May 3, 2025, at the Fort Barfoot, Virginia, post stadium. Maj. Gen. Joseph A. DiNonno, the 29th Infantry Division commander, presided over the ceremony and passed the organization’s colors from outgoing Command Sgt. Maj. Timothy M. Hawley to Saxton.

Virginia National Guard Soldiers and Airman conduct a collective training exercise simulating a response to a simulated mass casualty radiological event April 30, 2025, at Fort Barfoot, Virginia. The Soldiers and Airmen are assigned to the Richmond-based 34th Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and High-Yield Explosives Enhanced Response Force Package, or CERFP. During the exercise, search and rescue, decontamination and medical teams worked together to rescue simulated casualties portrayed by role players. 34th CERFP conducts collective training exercise at Fort Barfoot

Virginia National Guard Soldiers and Airman conducted a collective training exercise responding to a simulated mass casualty radiological event April 28 - May 2, 2025, at Fort Barfoot, Virginia. 

Virginia National Guard Soldiers and Airmen assigned to the Fort Barfoot-based 34th Civil Support Team conduct a training proficiency evaluation April 3, 2025, in Lynchburg, Virginia. During the full-scale exercise portion of the TPE, the unit responded to a notional chemical and biological weapons threat inside a haunted house attraction, performing reconnaissance surveys and collecting samples of unknown substances for identification. The team also practiced a “man down” scenario, simulating an incapacitated team member. The unit conducts their TPE, which includes two full-scale exercises evaluated by U.S. Army North, roughly every 18 months. The 34th CST can identify unknown substances, assess current and projected consequences, advise an incident commander on response measures and assist with requests for additional state support. 34th CST trained, ready after formal evaluation

The Virginia National Guard’s Fort Barfoot-based 34th Civil Support Team was evaluated as trained and mission capable after a Training Proficiency Evaluation March 31 - April 3, 2025, in Lynchburg, Virginia. The evaluation was conducted by U.S. Army North, which supervised the exercise and validated the unit’s level of readiness. 

Visitors to military installations including Fort Barfoot and Defense Supply Center Richmond will need to present a Real ID for access beginning May 7, 2025. The change is the implementation of the Real ID Act passed by Congress in 2005, which established minimum security standards for state-issued identifications including drivers licenses.

Visitors to military installations including Fort Barfoot and Defense Supply Center Richmond will need to present a Real ID for access beginning May 7, 2025. 

Pfc. Nicholas Warren and Sgt. Ivo Garner are named the Virginia Army National Guard’s Soldier and Noncommissioned Officer of the Year during a ceremony following the VaARNG Best Warrior Competition March 16, 2025, at Fort Barfoot, Virginia. Warren, assigned to the Rocky Mount-based 229th Chemical Company, 1030th Transportation Battalion, 329th Regional Support Group, and Garner, assigned to the Lynchburg-based Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, will represent Virginia at the Region II BWC later this year. Warren and Garner outlasted their competition over four days of events designed to test their Soldier skills, strength, endurance, marksmanship and knowledge. 329th RSG’s Warren, 116th IBCT’s Garner tops at Best Warrior Competition

Virginia Army National Guard Soldiers assigned to the 329th Regional Support Group and the 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team took top honors at the 2025 VaARNG Best Warrior Competition March 13-16, 2025, at Fort Barfoot, Virginia.
