Virginia artillery battalion takes responsibility for air defense mission in Iraq
Virginia National Guard Soldiers assigned to 1st Battalion, 111th Field Artillery Regiment, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team conduct pre-aim calibration test firing on the Counter-Rocket, Artillery, Mortar Intercept Land-based Phalanx Weapon System Feb. 6, 2022, at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. C-RAM is a set of systems used to detect and/or destroy incoming rockets, artillery and mortar rounds in the air before they hit their ground targets, and the VNG Soldiers are on federal active duty preparing to deploy to the Central Command area of operations in the Middle East to provide personnel and site protection. The pre-aim calibration test makes sure C-RAM radars are aligned with the guns and see everything the radars see so they can hit their intended target. Soldiers have trained on how load and operate the systems as well as function in the engagement operations center that controls direct fire engagements against suspected targets.
