VNG Soldiers, NCOs to compete in Best Warrior Competition

FORT PICKETT, Va. — The top Soldiers and noncommissioned officers from the Virginia Army National Guard’s major commands will compete in the Virginia National Guard Best Warrior Competition Feb. 21-24, 2019, at Fort Pickett, Virginia. 

The following Soldiers and NCOs were the winners in their respective units and will represent the commands at the competition:

29th Infantry Division:
Sgt. 1st Class Paul Bosserman
Spc. Esther Alger

116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team:
Sgt. Matthew Davis
Spc. Austin Turner

329th Regional Support Group:
Sgt. Daniel Abbott
Spc. Kyle Ramsey

91st Cyber Brigade:
Staff Sgt. Jimmy Gause
Spc. Frederick Roddy

Maneuver Training Center Fort Pickett:
Pfc. Grant Brizendine
Sgt. Devin Piotrowski

Recruiting and Retention Battalion:
Staff Sgt. Joshua Brainard

The Soldiers will report to Fort Pickett Feb. 21 and start the competition with a written exam. They will kick off the first full day of competition with land navigation, followed by an 8-mile ruck march. They will zero and qualify with both the M4 rifle and M9 pistol, and they will finish the day with evaluation on multiple Army Warrior Tasks.

The third day of the competition will start with the new Army Combat Fitness Test, followed by the Air Assault Obstacle Course and throwing hand grenades. The final event of the day is a formal dinner with their senior mentors.

The final day of competition will be appearance boards with a panel of command sergeants major, and then the top Soldier and NCO will be recognized in a closing ceremony.
