Waller Depot announced as site for future Museum of the Virginia National Guard

By Cotton Puryear | Virginia National Guard Public Affairs

The Virginia National Guard’s S. Gardner Waller Depot in Richmond, Virginia, has been selected as the site for the future Museum of the Virginia National Guard according to an announcement made Nov. 13, 2024, by Maj. Gen. James W. Ring, the Adjutant General of Virginia.

“The Virginia National Guard looks forward to bringing this important project to fruition and celebrating our legacy,” Ring said.

According to the announcement, some of the top evaluation criteria for selecting Waller Depot as the site was the potential for public access, local tourism and museum data, cost to improve existing facilities or construct new ones and proximity to Virginia National Guard Joint Force Headquarters and the Museum staff's central operations in Richmond.

The Counterdrug Task Force, 34th Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and High-Yield Explosives Enhanced Response Force Package and Virginia Defense Force are currently stationed at Waller Depot, and their operations will continue at their current location as work begins on the multi-year effort to transform the site into a public museum and education campus.

Named after Maj. Gen. Samuel Gardner Waller, Virginia's Adjutant General from 1931 to 1955, Waller Depot's history as the VNG's main distribution and storage depot from the end of World War II through the Cold War will continue with its new purpose.
