FORT BARFOOT, Va. –
Virginia National Guard and Fort Barfoot leaders ceremonially broke ground on a new Ammunition Supply Point administration building Feb. 18, 2025, at Fort Barfoot, Virginia.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place in the footprint of the planned new facility, construction of which is already underway. It is expected to be completed by early 2026.
Col. Jeffrey Cree, Virginia’s U.S. Property and Fiscal Officer, Col. Corey Stavinoha, the Virginia Army National Guard’s G4 logistics officer and Lt. Col. Eric Quinn, Fort Barfoot’s garrison commander, all participated in the groundbreaking ceremony, as did Lt. Col. James Wells, the G4 supply and services division chief, and Chief Warrant Officer 2 Kaitlyn Beck, the ASP’s accountable and explosives safety officer.
The new building, once finished, will provide expanded workspace and modernized facilities for the ASP’s staff, currently working out of an outdated building constructed nearly 50 years ago.
“It’s not a very modern facility,” Quinn said regarding the existing ASP administration building. “This one will be upgraded, we’ll make it more modern and give them more room, showers and different things they’ve been lacking over the years.”
“The ASP is incredibly excited for this,” said Beck. “It’s going to be great for our staff and any units we have coming through. It’s going to be a significant improvement for our operation.”
One of the biggest headaches with the old facility was constant plumbing issues.
“This building was constructed in roughly 1976 and has a lot of different issues, including the plumbing underneath the concrete,” said Quinn. “They’ve had issues almost monthly sometimes.”
The Fort Barfoot ASP is among the busiest on the East Coast, and houses millions of dollars worth of ammunition across approximately 15 magazines. The ASP serves customers from not only the Virginia National Guard, but other Army components and other services, including the Marine Corps and U.S. Navy.
“The Fort Barfoot ASP is one of the largest in the National Guard,” said Cree. “Having this building come to fruition will help a great deal. The employees at the ASP work very, very hard servicing the Virginia National Guard, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, the Marines, all the customers of Fort Barfoot. So, putting a new building here has been a long time coming.”
The improvements will allow the ASP staff to focus on their work and their customers, something they have already accomplished to high levels. In 2023, they celebrated an exceptional external inspection which saw them place in the top three of ASPs not just in the U.S. but internationally.
The ASP operates in three main areas. Stock and control manages accountable systems of record, coordinates with training units and manages all necessary documentation. Operations consists of the ammunition handlers who issue, receive and store ammunition inside the ASP. The Surveillance section inspects and ensures all ammunition stored at the ASP is safe for use and complies with worldwide ammunition notices.
