FORT PICKETT, Va. –
Virginia National Guard Soldiers assigned to units across the state attended an annual retirement briefing Sept. 10, 2022, at Fort Pickett, Virginia. The training was conducted by the Virginia Army National Guard G1 Personnel Directorate Retirement Services Office, led by Tanisha Roberts.
Col. Jennifer Martin, the Virginia Army National Guard G1 Personnel Officer, provided opening remarks at the briefing, reminding those on the brink of retirement that proper planning will help make the transition successful.
“Today’s information will help you make a decision on when you should retire,” said Martin.
Martin also highlighted how essential family members are to the retirement process, specifically thanking spouses during her remarks. Luz Koptchak, a Soldier and Family Readiness Program Specialist, also explained the importance of Family Programs, and reminded everyone that their services are available to all Soldiers.
Mike Muldowney, a certified financial planner, provided an overview of financial counseling and support available to the Soldiers. That counseling is confidential and provided at no cost, and can help Soldiers make sure they are financially ready to transition.
“If there’s one take away, it’s to know your risk,” said Muldowney, who stressed that he offers free online counseling sessions on Monday evenings.
Other presentations included educational information about TRICARE, Social Security and the Veterans Affairs Transition Assistance Program, all aimed at making sure any Soldier on the brink of retirement is well informed about making the transition.
